I wonder if Da Vinci was familiar whether or not the lungs or the heart were responsible for blood flow. He was very intricate with his illustrations of the human body; including the dissection of various veins, arteries and the heart.

Oops... I meant to post this on Western Civ. instead. Anyway, as I understand it, Leonardo's understanding of anatomy was more structural than physiological, and so he understood the structure of the heart, but not necessarily how it functioned exactly.
